SCIENCE NEWS

Carbohydrate Acts as Tumor Suppressor
Scientists have discovered that specialized complex sugar molecules that anchor cells into place act as tumor suppressors in breast and prostate cancers. [Burnham Institute for Medical Research, La Jolla]

Metabolic Factors May Play a Role in Risk for Breast Cancer
Physiological changes associated with the metabolic syndrome may play a role in the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. [American Association for Cancer Research, Philadelphia]

Research Shows PET Can Measure Effectiveness of Novel Breast Cancer Treatment
A new study shows that positron emission tomography (PET) scans in mice can be used to determine whether a novel type of breast cancer treatment is working as intended. [Advancing Molecular Imaging and Therapy, Reston]

Newly Appreciated Membrane Estrogen Receptor May be Important Therapeutic Target for Breast Cancer

LABORATORY RESEARCH

Interleukin-6 Induces an Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Phenotype in Human Breast Cancer Cells
This publication shows IL-6 as an inducer of an EMT phenotype in breast cancer cells and implicates its potential to promote breast cancer metastasis. [Oncogene]

A Novel Lung Metastasis Signature Links Wnt Signaling with Cancer Cell Self-Renewal and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Basal-like Breast Cancer
This study provides a molecular link between self-renewal, EMT, and metastasis in basal-like breast cancers. [Cancer Res]

CXCR4 and Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 are Elevated in Breast Carcinoma-Associated Fibroblasts and in Normal Mammary Fibroblasts Exposed to Factors Secreted by Breast Cancer Cells
Research data suggests that soluble breast cancer factors initiate the transdifferentiation of normal human mammary fibroblasts to tumor-promoting carcinoma-associated fibroblasts, and that through the induction of MMP-1 and CXCR4 levels, these cells exhibit an invasive and migratory phenotype. [Mol Cancer Res]

Complete Focal Adhesion Kinase Deficiency in the Mammary Gland Causes Ductal Dilation and Aberrant Branching Morphogenesis Through Defects in Rho Kinase-Dependent Cell Contractility
Data suggests that a model in which FAK coordinates contractile forces in MECs to maintain the bilayered cellular organization of myoepithelial and luminal epithelial cells in ducts, thus allowing proper mammary gland development and function. [FASEB J]

Coordinate Regulation of FOXO1 by miR-27a, miR-96, and miR-182 in Breast Cancer Cells
Targeting of FOXO1 by microRNAs may contribute to transformation or maintenance of an oncogenic state in breast cancer cells. [J Biol Chem]

ADAM23 Negatively Modulates alphavbeta3 Integrin Activation during Metastasis
Silencing of ADAM23 gene in a collection of 94 primary breast tumors was significantly associated with lower distant metastases-free and disease-specific survivals and was an independent prognostic factor for poor disease outcome. [Cancer Res]

Dual Activity Lysophosphatidic Acid Receptor Pan-Antagonist/Autotaxin Inhibitor Reduces Breast Cancer Cell Migration In vitro and Causes Tumor Regression In vivo
Both anti- and syn-BrP-LPA significantly reduce tumors at 3 mg/kg and BrP-LPA was superior to Taxol in reducing blood vessel density in tumors. [Cancer Res]

CLINICAL RESEARCH

Extended Adjuvant Hormonal Therapy with Exemestane Has No Detrimental Effect on the Lipid Profile of Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Patients: Final Results of the ATENA Lipid Sub-Study
Exemestane lacks the beneficial effect of tamoxifen on lipids; however, sequential adjuvant treatment with exemestane in postmenopausal breast cancer patients following cessation of five to seven years of tamoxifen does not appear to significantly alter the lipid profile compared to an observational arm. [Breast Cancer Res]

Orally Active Alpha-Tocopheryloxyacetic Acid Suppresses Tumor Growth and Multiplicity of Spontaneous Murine Breast Cancer
Study shows the ability of orally administered Alpha-TEA to delay tumor onset and to inhibit the progression and metastatic spread of a clinically relevant model of spontaneous breast cancer.
[Mol Cancer Ther]

A Longitudinal Study of the Metabolic Syndrome and Risk of Postmenopausal Breast Cancer
Due primarily to positive associations with serum glucose, serum triglycerides, and diastolic blood pressure, certain scenarios indicate a positive association between the metabolic syndrome and breast cancer.  [Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers & Prev]

Denosumab More Effective than Zometa in Patients with Bone Metastases
Among women with bone metastases from breast cancer, the investigational drug denosumab was more effective than Zometa at reducing the risk of bone complications such as fracture. The results of this Phase III clinical trial were made available in a press release from Amgen.

Preventing Breast Cancer the Focus of 2009-2010 Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise Grants
The world's leading breast cancer organization is now asking the scientific community for proposals for long-term research grants - some as large as $5 million - to study everything from the role of natural products to diets to breast cancer vaccines.
