ERK's Got Rhythm: Protein That Controls Cell Growth Found to Cycle In and Out of Cell Nucleus
Time-lapsed video of individual breast tissue cells reveals a never-before-seen event in the life of a cell - a protein that cycles between two major compartments in the cell. [Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland]

SCIENCE NEWS

Scientists Identify Possible Therapy Target for Aggressive Cancer
UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers have found that a naturally occurring protein - transforming growth factor beta1 which normally suppresses the growth of cancer cells, causes a rebound effect after prolonged exposure. [UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas]

Unlocked Key Mechanism Behind Breast Cancer Metastases
Abnormally high levels of P cadherin occur in about a third of all breast cancers and are associated with poor prognosis. Researchers found that these cancers are more aggressive because of excessive P cadherin levels that cause a cancer cell's internal organization to change. [IPATIMUP, University of Porto, Porto]

Combining Nanotubes and Antibodies for Breast Cancer 'Search and Destroy' Missions
To attack the HER2 protein, researchers have bonded an antibody, chicken immunoglobulin gamma, to short nanotubes.  The antibody and the nanotube have critical roles in selectively hunting down the HER2 tumor cells and eliminating them. [National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg]

LABORATORY RESEARCH

Rapid and Sustained Nuclear-Cytoplasmic ERK Oscillations Induced by Epidermal Growth Factor
The characterization of single-cell ERK dynamics provides a quantitative foundation for understanding the regulatory structure of this signaling cascade. [Mol Syst Biol]

Keeping Abreast of the Mammary Epithelial Hierarchy and Breast Tumorigenesis
Potential relationships between normal epithelial populations and breast tumor subtypes are discussed, with implications for understanding the cellular etiology underpinning breast tumor heterogeneity. [Genes & Dev]

TGF-Beta1-Induced Expression of Human Mdm2 Correlates With Late-Stage Metastatic Breast Cancer
Identification of Hdm2 as a downstream target of TGF-Beta1 represents a critical prosurvival mechanism in cancer progression and provides another point for therapeutic intervention in late-stage cancer. [J Clin Invest]

LARG at Chromosome 11q23 Has Functional Characteristics of a Tumor Suppressor in Human Breast and Colorectal Cancer
Enforced expression of LARG in breast and colorectal cancer cells by stable transfection resulted in reduced cell proliferation and colony formation, as well as in a markedly slower cell migration rate in colorectal cancer cells, providing functional evidence for LARG as a candidate tumor suppressor gene. [Oncogene]

Protein Kinase A Activation Confers Resistance to Trastuzumab in Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines
Activation of PKA signaling may be one mechanism contributing to trastuzumab resistance in Her2-positive breast cancer. [Clin Cancer Res]

Fibroblast Hepatocyte Growth Factor Promotes Invasion of Human Mammary Ductal Carcinoma In situ
Paracrine HGF/c-Met signaling between fibroblasts and preinvasive ductal carinoma in situ cells enhances the transition to invasive carcinomas and suggests that three-dimensional cocultures are appropriate models for testing therapeutics that target tumor microenvironment-enhanced invasiveness. [Cancer Res]

CLINICAL RESEARCH

Estrogen Receptor-Alpha Phosphorylation at Serine-118 and Tamoxifen Response in Breast Cancer
Compared with systemically untreated patients, researchers found evidence of a benefit from adjuvant tamoxifen among patients whose tumors had high ERAlphaS118-P expression. [J Natl Cancer Inst]

INDUSTRY NEWS

Clarient Granted Exclusive License to Commercialize Cancer Biomarker by Minerva Biotechnologies
Clarient, Inc. announced that privately held, Waltham, MA-based Minerva Biotechnologies has granted it the exclusive right to develop and commercialize a test that identifies the MUC1* protein (*denoting the tumorigenic form of MUC1), a biomarker researchers believe may be implicated in the spread of many cancers, including breast cancer.
